Michael and his wife recently built a house they had dreamed of since childhood: small and compact, made of wood and glass, where the surrounding nature plays a key role. Indeed, this modern Scandinavian cottage stands alone in the middle of beautiful untouched nature somewhere in the Danish outback, providing its owners with absolute relaxation and complete privacy. The interior spaces are decorated in a minimalist way, but they are so stylish and cozy. A great example of modern Scandinavian design!
Michael Robertson and Fran Derham have built their own childhood dream. A house of wood, where nature is the focal point, and the decor sophisticated, but relaxed.

On a hill in the countryside is a small wooden house. There are views of mountains, fields with cows, a pond and a little forest. And then there are childhood memories in numbers that lie as a foundation for the house and out in the nature around it.
Australian Michael Robertson and Fran Derham wanted to give the rural childhood they had experienced to their children, and the first step was to move out of the city of Melbourne and build the house they dreamed of.
"Michael has always enjoyed the space and freedom he had when he grew up in the country, and he always wanted to give his children a similar experience," says Fran Derham about his husband who was responsible for the building itself.
Originally, the plans were to build a very simple cabin, but instead the couple chose a wooden house with straight lines and sharp edges. To make the term more rustic, recycled planks and surplus materials were used from a number of buildings around. The couple carefully selected the right finishes to compliment the tree, and after two years the house was finished.
- Apart from the aborigines, everyone in Australia comes from somewhere else. And as with Australia, - or inspired by - everything in this house from different countries and cultures, says Fran Derham, highlighting the American Oregon fire, French fireplace and English-inspired cuisine.

With the frames in place, the couple could concentrate on the interior, where they had a clear idea of ??how the room should look.
- My vision for the decor was to complement the tree - let it be the protagonist - but also to add some brighter colors to help illuminate the dark places, says Fran Derham.
She chose soft furnishings and interiors with an elegant look to give sophisticated counterbalance to the rustic house. The goal was to create a sense of relaxed luxury.
- Now that I have come so far with the interior design, I look forward to finding art that will fit in here - not that there is much wall space, as we have many panoramic windows that give a natural flow. It's almost as if nature is the art. The view is the painting on the wall, and we can sit and look at it all day in front of the flaming fireplace.
Everyday, the family lives in Melbourne, but since the tree house is only an hour and a half away, they go there on weekends and holidays. Now that the building of the childhood dream is over, it applies to the garden and otherwise just to enjoy the place, says Fran Derham.
- It's great that the house makes us feel: Relaxed with a feeling of soft calm. Going into the house is almost like diving into the water - everything is rinsing away. It is really a unique experience to live in a house made entirely of wood, and you sleep like a stone.
