An All-Day Dining Destination Designed to Bring the Outdoors in
Background & Brief
Blacksheep were approached by Westmont Hospitality to create a new all-day dining destination in nearby Kensington Gardens. The team was commissioned to work on the branding for the overall concept, as well as the interior design for a new venue that would seek to bring to life the natural beauty of Hyde Park. From the outset, it was fundamental that the venue catered for a wide range of audiences and palates, from those wishing to extend their visit to the park with a tasty snack to those busy professionals looking for that convenient ‘grab & go’ option, as well as friends and families seeking the perfect place to catch up and graze over lunch or dinner.
Our Solution
Brand Identity
Blacksheep began the branding process with the all-important naming of the concept, before translating this across the brand’s signage, menus, business stationary, website and bespoke illustrations. The team took inspiration from the simplicity of earthy and raw ingredients, utilising the complementary colour palette of root vegetables, fruit and leafy greens in their natural state, to communicate the core values of the brand. The end result, ‘Urban Meadow’, brings to life the wilderness and raw beauty of a meadow set against a sophisticated, urban backdrop and also highlights the restaurant’s commitment to providing the very best of healthy and hearty British food with a focus on seasonality.
Interior Design
Blacksheep set about implementing a range of different and unique settings within the restaurant environment in order to deliver on the brief. The design team focused on creating a relaxing lounge perfect for those seeking that safe haven to relax and unwind over a glass of wine, as well as a lush green terrace to soak up the scenic atmosphere along with the restaurant’s very own private dining area, where guests could also congregate and read the paper over a cup of coffee.
A number of key design elements were then applied to the overall setting to ensure the untamed beauty of a meadow was translated across all touch points. The entrance itself provides a natural transcendence from the park as a variety of wild flowers and ferns welcome guests to the venue. Hanging plants with ivy, ferns and other vivacious greens also feature outside the restaurant acting as a secondary denotation of the great outdoors. Additionally, the availability of natural light, soft green leather banquettes and the use of natural wood flooring throughout combine to give a relaxing, yet bright and airy feel to the location.
One of the most striking design elements of the interior features a wall coated in copper with oversized fret cut leaves revealing the contrast colour of the wall behind. The effect is then reversed as a selection of these oversized copper leaves are found hanging gracefully from the restaurant’s main ceiling. This reminds the guests of the manmade and natural unification of the concept itself, whilst also emphasising the sophistication of the venue, allowing it to dazzle during the day but add drama in the evening. Reclaimed items, such as a 1950’s cocktail cabinet, can be found throughout the venue to add to that sense of unpolished elegance.
