A refined and respectful new build in the Bayside area of Melbourne by Adam Kane Architects, for a family to “grow into, rather than grow out of”.
Local studio Adam Kane Architects have broken our Instagram more than once with their designs. Whether it’s a moody, sculpted bathroom space or a barn-like exterior; their design work simply speaks for itself.
In the past, we’ve enjoyed exploring Adam Kane Architects’ regional projects, including the Hardwood House in Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges home and barn project. This time, we’re fortunate to explore a recently completed home in Bayside Melbourne, for a young family ‘to adapt, develop and make their own’. It’s a home that should come with a warning: you’re going to be instantly calmed by its pared-back and polished interiors.

Director of Adam Kane Architects Adam Kane said the client brief centred around a timeless space for a young family to grow, that was ‘modern, yet refined’. Adam said he was determined to design a home that the family could “grow into rather than grow out of, which we can often see with a typical family home design,” he said.
The new build is situated among Edwardian brick homes, so it also needed to be conscious of disturbing the existing setting and sympathetic to the neighbourhood’s characteristics. This heritage context has been referenced in the exterior design through the intricate brickwork, in a hit-and-miss tonal pattern that conceals the glazed front door entry. This brickwork gets bonus points for keeping the entrance secure but maintaining a sense of openness.
Optimal orientation lets the north-facing, open-plan living area bask in natural light. The large glazed openings also permit you to move from the indoor to outdoor living with ease and prioritise parental supervision with views of the swimming pool and courtyard area. The linen sheers maintain privacy and provide the space with a real soft and serene quality.

The studio’s approach was holistic, “with a strong focus on sustainability”. As Adam puts it, “We deliberately chose to take a less-is-more approach and leave out unnecessary details that have the potential to date.” The objects that made the cut include the Splinter Chair by Nendo, the dining table custom designed by Adam Kane Architects, the Nook Sofa from Jardan, and the Hemera Desk Lamp Ceramic Sculpture by Ross Gardam.
Adam Kane Architects applied restraint in their refined palette of finishes”. Polished plaster walls, Signorino Statuario Marble, dark timber veneer cabinetry and grey-washed oak floors all combine for a balance of light and dark, sharp and smooth.
Adam Kane Architects really are experts at layering beautiful materials and minimalist interiors. By considering how this family home will take shape over the years, their forward-thinking design deliberately steers away from trends and toward longevity – an effort worthy of an AIDA Award in 2019 or two.
