Perhaps one of the greatest challenge interior designers face is to create a space that is a reflection of both the client's and their own sensibilities. But for French decorator Jean de Just and his client in San Marino, Brazil, it was love at the first sight...of color. In fact, de Just’s client hired him for that on sight, literally. “She said I’ll hire you because what you're wearing is so colorful,” de Just says.
Not only does he wear color well, but de Just (who studied design under the late legend Alberto Pinto) is also a master of mixing dramatic hues, patterns, and prints in his interiors—much to the joy of this particular client who shuns black and white. In the living room, which opens on to a large terrace, de Just hand-painted the walls and arches himself. The armchairs are covered in yellow and pink printed Chinese silks that he had purchased on one of his trips overseas, and the rug is from a local vendor.

The homeowner's daughter’s room features cool blues and a mural by a local Indian artist, while the master bedroom is a haven of warm shades (think pink!) and floral wallpaper. On the whole, de Just describes this apartment as a representation of his client: joyful. And, really, that’s a perfect description of how we feel when we look at it.
