IWAI OMOTESANDO
Crazy Wedding, a wedding planning company founded in 2002, opened its very first venue named “IWAI OMOTESANDO” in the heart of Tokyo's executive-class area of art, architecture and high fashion.
"IWAI" means ”celebration” in Japanese and this venue gets its name from client’s belief of the intrinsic celebration – gathering together, spending quality time – and is meant for them to represent the excellence of the celebrating act itself.
As the founder and CEO of the brand are fond of our previous works such as Dandelion Chocolate Kuramae and % Arabica coffee Arashiyama, we decided to construct this establishment from its concept. The first keyword given by them was “undecorative and essential”. We grasp the image which the space has a firm philosophy. The definition of philosophy in this project is the strength of the space’s power and it is strong enough to make all visitors understand the concept instantly, and also be able to tell someone else clearly. As a result of discussions, we have reached the concept “A ceremonial venue for any kinds of celebrations in life”. It seems many ceremonial venues in Japan, especially designed for wedding ceremony, have the certain taste of provisional magnificence. Our aim in this project was not design a perfect stage to show off, but to reconstruct the attitude of celebrating .
In order to reflect this concept in design, we started to think from how to increase gust’s motivation for the ceremony. We made a 20 meters of narrow entrance approach named “Sando” as a space to refresh their mind and enhanced the noble feelings. This also works as the new facade of its architecture and gives sense of unity. In addition to this, the two buildings are connected by a courtyard, where trees, originally from the nearby Meiji Shrine, recreate a “Jingu forest”. When the guests walk through the forest, seasonal plants feast their eye.
The letter gallery, one of the most iconic spaces of IWAI, we designed a mail post, where the guests can receive a message letter. The names of the guests are on the digital screen. The guest will find a letter and it contains letters for each guest from organizer. It produces a quality moment to recall memories, feel welcome, and encourage them to engage in more interacting other guests. The ceremony hall has a concrete structure but the rounded corners of the ceiling and the walls create a beautiful lighting scenery. Also, a beautiful window, which opens to the courtyard, let natural light filter inside the chapel. There is also a strong emphasis on the mortar shaped slope at the corridor. The entrance of the hall located in the lowest part of the slope and the mirror at the both ends make the guests feel this space bigger. Gust get the senses of the past, the present, and the future while walking this dimly lit corridor. On the second floor we designed a banquet hall and on the third floor we created a space for the bride and family.
“Receiver” has been a good describing word of us so far, designing a space by amplifying client’s voice and subconscious needs. However, this project was the one which we made a sound source together with the client. IWAI OMOTESANDO is a significant space for client to reinforce their brand’s vision of update and revalue the wonderfulness of celebrations in life.
