This Albert Park house by Wellard Architects, with a wonderfully lush outdoor area by Eckersley Garden Architecture is on the market.
Wellard Architects has recently added a brilliant two storey addition to this Victorian home, cleverly overcoming the typical challenges many Victorian houses face, by introducing a double-height void permeating the communal spaces. This structural change has allowed for more space, northern light, and natural ventilation throughout the home, defying its relatively small footprint. A timber bridge links the first-floor volumes, providing a playfully practical means of connection across the void.
The home’s interiors are simple yet hard-working, showing restraint and an appreciation for simple materials, including warm timbers and black kitchen cabinetry. ‘Utilising beautiful materials and detailing them honestly is always rewarding, particularly when using such as select few materials as we have done with this project,’ says principal architect at Wellard Architects, Huw Wellard.
This property has the added inner-city benefit of possessing a small but established garden. Existing palm trees in the backyard were preserved during the renovation, with the addition of new low-maintenance elements. This outdoor area is directly accessible and in full view of the living space via full-height sliding glass doors. An additional outdoor barbecue area and deck are off the second storey.
Wellard Architects have achieved a wonderfully resolved modern family home that will only get better with time. We’ll be incredibly jealous of whoever snaps this one up… !
Wellard Architects | Albert Park House
Wellard Architects, based in Melbourne, Australia, has designed a Victorian bachelor flat across the street from Fawkner Park in Albert Park, on the south bank of the Yarra River.
Wellard Architects
